My wife and I are predominantly side sleepers. She is 5’7″ and 145lbs and a *hot* sleeper. I stay warm by proximity, but am 6’1″ and 245lbs. Our current mattress is a Kingsdown bodysystem (2-dot, 2008 model, tight top) that I bought at a local store. Apart from being too small, it is starting to form impressions (at least on my side), so we are looking to purchase a new king set. Recommendations? I need firm support, but my wife likes a bit of comfort. We are prepared to invest in at least a high mid-level mattress. Thank you!

Avoiding mattresses with memory foam will be key to sleeping cooler. Also, memory foam, contrary to the hype, doesn’t keep its shape very well.
Support for a big man and comfort for a slender woman is tricky. In fact, it’s impossible to do with one mattress.
Today’s mattresses are one-sided and designed to be more disposable than in years past.
Durability and comfort are at odds with each other. You’ll always sacrifice one for the other.
When you have two people who require both, the best way to do that is with a firmer, more durable mattress and then soften the surface with a soft latex topper. Latex, since the 1920s, has been the most comfortable and most durable material available.
It sleeps cool and is resilient enough to soften the surface of a mattress without you sinking through it and without sacrificing the underlying firm support. Two inches of soft latex is all you need to do the job.

Best mattress? There are a couple that stand out as best quality. One is the Simmons Beautyrest Black Desiree in plush/firm, using a triple strand coil in every other pocket and pre-compressed padding, with very little memory foam. The little memory foam that it does have is Next Generation technology, making it less temperature sensitive. Here’s the link for that.
The other is by Stearns & Foster. Their best spec is at their P level, called Twila on our site. It uses a dual coil in each pocket.
It’s available in a variety of comfort choices, but because there is no memory foam and already has a layer of latex just above the coils, it would be ok to go with the luxury plush…a choice you wife would prefer. Here is the link for that.
The beds I’ve recommended are not the most expensive. As you go up the line from there, you’ll get more padding and as a result, the problem you have now will repeat itself.
